07 July:  Gibraltar

Today we landed in Gibraltar.  There were a bunch of huge tankers with smaller ones putting big blocks on them.  (editors note: the big blocks are shipping containers).  The first thing we did was go inside the city wall where you could see lots of shops.  Some of the roads were flat. But others were windy and the sidewalks were under construction.  The roads were so narrow, you had to dodge the cars.  But that was OK because it was easy for us to dodge.  The cars seemed to go by without caring about anyone else.

On the sail to Gibraltar, we were going almost 10 knots.  Usually we only go 5 knots.  That is the fastest that our boat has ever gone.   There is only one road to Gibraltar but it is hard to get through because the airport runway goes over the road!

Tomorrow I hope to go the the underground city of Gibraltar and go into the Castle.  After the Castle, we might even see wild monkeys.  Otherwise if we are not it town and on the boat, it is usually pretty boring.  Even more boring than school.

Bye,

Aethan

Hi Aethan! Love reading about all your adventures and what you are seeing. Bummer about the seasickness, I hope that doesn't happen often. I get both sea sick AND air sick (in small planes and bumpy rides) so I feel you pain!! Land activities sound a lot more fun - esp the scooters.
Keep writing about EVERYTHING! We love you lots, and think about you all the time.
Love,
Aunt Ruth

Hi Aethan,

So I've been waiting to hear since your last post: Did you see any wild monkeys?? The only "monkeys" I get to see aren't really monkeys since they haven't got any tails... Chimps is what I have around here in the form of Bella and Ava. (Their favourite thing is climbing ropes, poles - you know, like the ones that hold up street signs.) I told the girls about you going to see a castle and they really want to see pictures of what a real castle looks like.

We've been doing a lot of driving (Silver Spring to Sault Ste. Marie to Windsor to Toronto and soon to Boston). I don't think that the I-75 highway offers scenery as nice as what you are seeing. Thinking of you and your brother, and wondering what you do while you're on the boat to entertain yourself.

Take care,
Shelly

(P.S. - When we are back at your house, I will probably need you to e-mail me a lesson on how to turn on the TV again!!)

Hey Aethan - I am sure you are busy learning Spanish and exploring lots of amazing places; meeting lot of new people; and enjoying a year without school! Write again, let us know how you are doing. I was going to ask how the piano playing is, but I guess it doesn't fit in the boat! LOL

Aethan, I really enjoyed reading your log and looking at all the pictures. I'm envious of you for all the great places you're seeing and the new foods you're trying!

I hope you have some some good books to read on the boat if things get too boring. My husband and I just got back home four days ago from a 17-day trip driving to Aspen, Colorado and back while seeing lots of stuff on the way. Sitting in the car got quite boring too at times, especially in western Kansas and eastern Colorado where everything was flat, dry, and hot (110 degrees in Hutchinson, Kansas!). We did go down in a salt mine in Kansas which was really neat. I loved Rocky Mountains National Park, which is beautiful and has lots of elk, deer, moose, etc. We did a lot of hiking and some sections of the trails still had snow. You should have seen me when my feet came out from under me coming down one snow-covered section and I fell on my rear end! It didn't hurt at all because of the snow.

I'm looking forward to reading more entries in your log.
